ACT Sessions

Sessions using ACT are similar to traditional CBT sessions. At the beginning of your session, your counselor may utilize a mindfulness exercise such as deep breathing or guided imagery to help you focus on the present moment and be more open to your thoughts and feelings. After the mindfulness exercise, you and your counselor will explore new insights you may have had regarding topics discussed at the previous session, as well as the outcomes of your homework assignments. Then, you and your counselor will collaborate to set an agreed upon agenda for today’s session. Once you and your counselor have agreed on the issues you’d like to focus on during the session, he or she will help you explore your problems using techniques such as metaphors, breathing exercises, meditation, guided imagery, and goal setting. Your counselor may end the session by giving you assignments to help you use these techniques to manage your problems on your own.
