Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises help reduce stress by making your body feel more like it does when it’s already relaxed. For this reason, breathing exercises can be useful when you experience emotional extremes or have difficulty focusing on your thoughts. Some of the exercises your counselor may teach you include techniques where you simply focus on the sensations in your body as you breathe, or more specific breathing exercises such as diaphragmatic breathing, where you breathe from deep within your diaphragm, holding your breath for a certain number of counts. There are many different types of breathing exercises, and together, you and your counselor can find what works for you.
