Metaphors

During sessions, your counselor may use various metaphors. Metaphors are short stories or figures of speech that help illustrate certain ideas. An example of a metaphor frequently used by Russ Harris, a leading ACT therapist, is the Two Mountains metaphor, which illustrates the idea that we all struggle and must climb “mountains” in life. Your counselor isn’t perfect and has not reached the top of his or her mountain, but he or she may be able to see things on your mountain that you can’t see, and can alert you to potential dangers to help you climb your mountain more successfully.
